Tech CU Celebrates 60 Years of Serving its Members

Today, we are celebrating our 60th anniversary! It’s hard to believe that we were founded all the way back on May 27, 1960 by the innovative employees at Fairchild Semiconductor who wanted a better way to manage their money. What started with a few thousand dollars and a couple of accounts has evolved into one of the 100 largest credit unions in the US. And, no matter how large we have grown, our roots are firmly planted in Silicon Valley. Having had a “front-row seat” to some of the world’s greatest technological advances, we continue to support the entrepreneurial spirit, diverse cultures, and unique needs of the high tech industry — reflecting our original founders’ vision. You’ll see this reflected in the timeline of our history below.

As you can see, we’ve changed a lot over the years. We have 10 Bay Area branches and have grown to over $3 billion in assets and more than 125,000 members throughout California and the U.S. We have greatly expanded our offerings beyond personal banking to include financial management, private banking, commercial lending, and business banking. But no matter how much we’ve evolved, we’ve always invested our resources to deliver the best rates and outstanding service and benefits and believed in giving back to the community.

Over the past decade, we’ve invested more than $2.3 million in our local communities. This money goes towards supporting local organizations in STEAM education (science, technology, engineering, art, and math), workforce development, financial literacy, affordable housing, and health and wellness. These organizations include but are not limited to: Second Harvest of Silicon Valley, Family Giving Tree, Breakthrough Silicon Valley, Downtown Streets Team, Housing Trust Silicon Valley, Destination: Home, San Jose State University, The Tech Interactive, American Red Cross, and Cancer CarePoint, among others.

While social distancing measures are making it hard to celebrate the way we normally would, we hope you'll join us in a moment of virtual celebration to mark our 60th anniversary.
