Tech CU Participates in White House Task Force

On November 21, 2014, President Obama established the White House Task Force on New Americans — a government-wide effort tasked with better integrating immigrants and refugees into U.S. communities. The idea was simple — anyone willing to work hard and play by the rules was welcome.

On Friday, April 1, Tech CU participated in the White House Task Force on New Americans’ Regional Convening — bringing together a variety of state, federal and local agencies as well as service providers, the private sector and local community leaders. The event’s premise was to highlight current multi-sector partnerships on immigrant integration, and to discuss promising practices to strengthen the regional infrastructure in supporting existing and emerging immigrant communities.

Since its implementation, the task force has been busy implementing recommended actions and highlighting local models of success, including:

    • Spearheading the Building Welcoming Communities Campaign (BWCC) — encouraging local efforts with 47 communities signed on to date.
    • Launching the “Stand Stronger” Citizenship Awareness Campaign — reaching the 8.8 million lawful permanent residents (LPRs) eligible to apply for citizenship.
    • Naming Presidential Ambassadors for Citizenship and Naturalization — harnessing the stories of prominent new Americans and those born here to promote naturalization, bolster integration initiatives, and increase awareness of contributions from new Americans.
    • Committing 150 Welcoming Communities AmeriCorps members to nearly 100 communities.
    • Launching the “Made It in America” initiative to promote entrepreneurship, and holding more than 80 “SBA 101” classes for immigrant and refugee entrepreneurs.
    • Supporting five communities seeking to strengthen integration and local networks through adult education providers.

At Tech CU, we’re here to help those who are new to the country — we know it’s not easy. That’s why we offer products and services aimed at easing this transition, in addition to free seminars providing information on how Green Card holders can become US citizens.
