Celebrate the Opening of SJMA’s New Permanent Collection Galleries

At Tech CU, we believe in the power of art to inspire, educate, and connect communities. That’s why we are thrilled to support the San José Museum of Art (SJMA) as it reaches an exciting milestone: the launch of its first dedicated collection galleries.

On March 7, 2025, SJMA will unveil Tending and Dreaming: Stories from the Collection, a new exhibition that offers an unprecedented look at the Museum’s growing collection. Featuring nearly 50 artists from the Bay Area and beyond, this installation tells powerful stories through a diverse range of artworks, from paintings and sculptures to video and photography.

Join the Opening Celebration on First Friday

To celebrate, SJMA’s First Friday on March 7 from 6–9 PM will be an evening of art, music, and community. The event is free and open to all, featuring live music by Citizens Jazz, a dynamic collective led by bassist Caroline Chung.

This First Friday will also feature delicious late-night bites and a cash bar at El Cafecito by Mezcal Restaurant, along with special member discounts at the café and Museum Store.

    Tending and Dreaming

For the first time, SJMA is creating a permanent space to showcase its collection, which includes over 2,700 works of contemporary art. Organized into thematic sections, Tending and Dreaming highlights a wide range of perspectives, including:

    • Stories of place and belonging, featuring works by rafa esparza and Christine Howard Sandoval
    • Explorations of identity and migration, with pieces by Shilpa Gupta and Binh Danh
    • Art that reclaims history, featuring Chitra Ganesh, Robert Arneson, and Guadalupe Rosales
    • Technology and connectivity, explored through artists like Christine Sun Kim and Martha Atienza
    • The relationship between humans and nature, captured in the works of Laura Aguilar and Gail Wight
    • Abstract and unseen worlds, represented by Candida Alvarez, Lee Mullican, and Harry Powers

Through these works, the Museum fosters a deeper sense of community pride while positioning artists as storytellers shaping cultural conversations.
